Dear KLA Leaders:

My name is Mr. Hamler and I would like to welcome to KLA all new and returning 6h grade students. I will be teaching the 6th grade Humanities classes and a REACH Leadership class. I am so excited to get to know all of you and to help facilitate your learning and understanding of history and language arts.

I graduated from college at Cal Poly Pomona with a business degree and then attended National University for my teaching credential. I also have a Master's Degree in Cross-Cultural Education.  This will be my twelfth  year at KLA. When I began working at KLA, I was astounded at how many of the students took the role of a leader seriously. I am hoping to be astounded again this year.  I consider myself  lucky to be at a school with such dedicated students, staff, parents and administration.

One of my favorite things to do is to read and imagine myself in a new world. Currently I am reading a book by David Baldacci called “Divine Justice”. It’s about a CIA agent that uncovered a scandal within the government.  It has so many twists and turns and exciting moments. I am planning on reading some new books in class with you this year to inspire you and to share my love of reading.

I had an incredible summer. I spent much of my time surfing, camping,  and  hanging out with my wife, 9 year old daughter, Isabella, and  my 5 ½   year old boy, Granger. I also spent a lot of time with my dogs, Charlie and Lucy.  This summer the Hamler family  went to New York, Montreal, Vermont, New Mexico and Colorado for a month! We visited the lush, green Adirondacks in upstate New York. We then went exploring the very French city of Montreal where we ate a delicacy called Poutine(Google it). After that , we visited the  quaint town of Burlington. We came home for a week to spend some time at the beaches of San Diego and then headed out for a two week trip to New Mexico and Colorado. Colorado was incredible with giant mountains that surrounded tiny villages. We went river tubing and horseback riding as well in Colorado. On our way back home, through New Mexico, we encountered an incredible sandstorm and road flooding. It was a crazy drive! I  spent the final days of my vacation preparing with the new Amplify curriculum that we will be continuing this year.  You guys are going to love it! I learned so many new techniques in my practice that I think you will really enjoy!

In my class, I will show leadership and expect you to do the same. I expect students to respect others, do all their classwork, participate in class frequently, work diligently in groups, complete all their homework, and most of all, convey an attitude that they are always striving for success. This year we will be focusing on developing Habits of  Mind to help guide our learning through the new Common Core curriculum.

If you or your parents have any questions or concerns about your performance in my class, or any other issues, you are welcome to set up an appointment with me after school. Email me anytime at Jhamler@mykla.org. I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to meeting and learning more about each and every one of you!

Sincerely,

Mr. Hamler
